How Long Should Appliances Last?

Every appliance has an expected lifespan, which can be extended with proper maintenance. However, most kitchen appliances aren't as durable as expected. Based on 35 years of experience, the average lifespan of most appliances is 4.4 years, excluding high-end models.
Dishwashers: 3-7 years
Washers and Dryers: 3-7 years
Ovens and Ranges: 3-7 years
Microwaves: 3-7 years
If your appliance is approaching the end of its expected lifespan and often has issues, replacing it could save you more trouble over time. Conversely, if it is still fairly new and only requires a minor repair, it might be more sensible to fix it.
When to Repair Your Appliances
Opting for repairs can be a wise and economical decision, but only if they prove beneficial in the long term. Here’s when choosing a repair is sensible:
The repair cost is less than 50% of the replacement cost: If the repair is affordable and prolongs the appliance's lifespan, it’s generally a good choice.
Your appliance is still under warranty: Many manufacturers provide warranties that include parts and labor, making repairs an obvious decision.
The issue is minor or a one-time occurrence: A small fix, such as replacing your dryer filter or unclogging a dishwasher drain, can restore full functionality without significant expense.
When to Replace Your Appliances
Sometimes, replacing an appliance is the smarter move, especially if repairs will only provide a temporary fix. Here’s when replacement is the better option:
Frequent Breakdowns: Replacement is more practical if your appliance is constantly breaking down or has multiple issues at once.
Outdated Technology: Older appliances may lack energy efficiency or the advanced features of newer models. Upgrading can save you money in the long run.
Repair Costs Exceed 50% of the Replacement Cost: If repairs are expensive and your appliance is already aging, replacing it can be a better investment.
Safety Concerns: Faulty wiring, gas leaks, or other safety hazards are reasons to replace an appliance immediately.
