4 Common Oven Problems

Here are 4 common oven problems and some troubleshooting tips. If you can't resolve an issue yourself, let us do it for you, Michatech Appliance Repair!

1. Oven Won’t Turn On

First, check all of the basic culprits of power loss. Ensure that the appliance is plugged in and check for a tripped circuit breaker. If the oven still doesn’t turn on, it is possible that there is a broken wire, a bad broil element, or a variety of other reasons. Due to the high risk of electrical shock, a professional should be called in to handle these situations.

2. Incorrect Temperatures With Thanksgiving approaching, the last thing you need is a problem with your oven.

If you’re finding that food is undercooked or overcooked when it comes out of the oven, you should test the temperature. Use a thermometer to test the accuracy of the oven. If the temperature doesn’t match the temperature listed on the display, check the owner manual for recalibration instructions.

If food is cooking unevenly, a damaged or broken element is the most likely problem. To check, you can turn on the elements and watch as they turn red. It should be easy to see if an element is not working properly. Replacing the element should result in your food cooking evenly.

3. Oven Light Won’t Work

This problem could be as simple as a burnt out bulb. Try replacing the bulb. If this doesn’t work, it could be caused by a faulty light switch, electronic control, or connecting wire. This is another issue associated with high electrical risk, so you should call in a professional.

4. Oven Door Won’t Open or Close

If the door won’t open after a self-clean cycle, try unplugging the appliance for five minutes. If this doesn’t work, there may be damage to the lock. Chances are that if the oven door won’t stay securely closed, the hinges may need to be replaced.
